Senior Steward’s Response to the Levy Settlement
Published: 29 October 1999
Reacting to the news that the Government appointed-members of the Levy Board had accepted the bookmakers amended offer for the 2000/2001 Levy Scheme, Christopher Spence, Senior Steward of the Jockey Club, said:
“The settlement reached today is deeply disappointing. In my opinion it is neither a reflection of racing’s needs nor of the bookmakers’ capacity to pay.
“This demonstrates once again that the existing Levy system is seriously flawed and in need of urgent review.”
