He is Chairman of Jockey Club Estates and was appointed a Steward of the Jockey Club for the second time in 2008. He is a Trustee of the British Racing School and also a Director of Fakenham Racecourse. He owns and breeds horses to race under Rules and in Point to Points.

Paul Roy, Chairman of the BHA, said of the appointment:

“Andrew has had a long and distinguished involvement in many aspects of horseracing. He has a wealth of experience and knowledge of the sport and its regulation and I have no doubt that he will make a valuable contribution to the BHA and its Board.”

Andrew Merriam said:

“I am delighted to have been appointed a Director and I am looking forward to working alongside the other members of the Board. Having been closely involved with the sport throughout my life I am well aware of the many challenges facing British Racing but I am also encouraged by the progress BHA and its stakeholders are making in addressing them.

“It is my aim to contribute as best I can to helping the Board achieve its objectives for the betterment of the sport.”
