The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) is pleased to announce the launch of a new Trainee Handicapper Scheme, giving up to two enthusiastic candidates with knowledge of racing the opportunity to begin a career in the industry. The Scheme has been introduced following the success of the Trainee Stipendiary Steward Scheme, launched by BHA in 2013.
The Scheme consists of a one-year placement during which successful applicants will be trained on all areas of a Handicapper’s role as well as gaining specific experience in the area of Race Planning and analysis, along with the wider work of BHA. The placement will be based at BHA offices but also involves work on the racecourse, working closely with the Handicapping and Racing teams.
The Trainee Handicapper Scheme is aimed at graduate level individuals, and applications from candidates of all ages are welcome. Following the paid one-year placement there will be the potential opportunity of a permanent role within BHA.
Phil Smith, BHA Head of Handicapping said:
“The Scheme is an excellent opportunity for individuals to gain first-hand experience of working in the field of Handicapping. It also allows BHA to recruit from a wide range of potential candidates and bring talented and committed individuals into the organisation.
“The Trainee Stipendiary Steward Scheme has proved a successful platform in which to recruit and train the Stipendiary Stewards of the future and we hope the new Trainee Handicapper Scheme will be just as rewarding.”
