Mrs Susan Knights has won the opportunity to join the Sport of Kings in a fantastic day’s racing for the whole family, at Newmarket racecourse on Sunday 11 June at the Rowley Mile course. The national competition was run by the Inside Soap magazine in their March issue (circulation 251,179) in association with Newmarket Racecourses Trust and the British Horseracing Board (BHB).
The prize gives Mrs Knights the opportunity to take up to 14 guests with her on the day out. They will be driven to and from the racecourse and each given Members badges, racecards, lunch, a guided behind the scenes tour of the racecourse and tips about the day’s likely winners from a racing expert.
Sunday Racing is a great day out, especially attractive for those new to racing. As the main leisure day of the week families can enjoy Sunday Racing as an alternative exciting and enjoyable ‘outing’. Leicester’s own racecourse at Oadby has two Sunday fixtures this year on June 18, Leicester Mercury Day and August 13, World Snooker Stars Day. Entertainment at these fixtures include Leicester’s own clowns and Street Entertainers, ‘The Weathermen’, bouncy castles and face painters. On World Snooker Stars Day visits from Jimmy White, John Virgo, Peter Ebdon and Ronnie O’Sullivan are scheduled. Ronnie Wood from the Rolling Stones is also expected to make an appearance on this day.
The BHB supported this competition as part of the initiatives aimed at capitalising on the good attendances achieved at last year’s Sunday race fixtures, where crowds (adults and children) totalled around a third of a million. This year sees a huge expansion of the Sunday Racing programme, with 62 Sunday fixtures at 43 courses on 20 ‘racing’ Sundays, 14 of them consecutive, which provide many opportunities for those who have never been racing before to try this great social event.
