SAVILL RESIGNS FROM LEVY BOARD

19 Nov 1999 Pre-2014 Releases

Peter Savill, Chairman of the British Horseracing Board (BHB), has announced his decision to resign from the Levy Board with immediate effect. He had been the first BHB Chairman to sit on the Levy Board.
Peter Savill said of his decision
“”I have had serious and growing concerns about the operation of the Levy Board in the areas of fixtures, the levy and General Betting Duty. That, together with BHB’s public and formal aspirations to see the levy replaced by a commercial mechanism as soon as possible, lead me to the conclusion that, as Chairman of Racing’s Governing Authority, I should no longer feel constrained by Levy Board membership from commenting publicly on matters which are of importance to the racing industry, and about which I believe they should be kept fully informed.
“”I believe that such comments are more properly made from outside the Board, in order not to breach the important principle of collective responsibility.””
The BHB Board will nominate a successor at its next meeting on 14th December 1999.
